Granny review

Frederick Clark

Before you launch this first-person stealth adventure, ask yourself a question. What do you know about Granny’s love? She is so fond that she’s keeping you in for your own good! And if you try to escape, she’ll introduce you to her bat! Download Granny and try to escape from the house. You only have five nights to leave this dark place…

Graphics 8/10

Of course, it’s not photorealistic, and it’s even less detailed than Hello Neighbor. But face the truth: the devices to play it with aren’t all-powerful enough for “console-class visuals”. On the other hand, the picture, as if drawn by a talented but unskilled student, gets even more terrible, blood and darkness being dominant. As for sounds, they are just good, so put your best headphones on.

Gameplay 9/10

In this first-person adventure, you need to steal past your Granny and her traps until you find the exit. Don’t drop items on the floor. Don’t step on anything sensible. Don’t make a single sound: she will hear it and react. And if you have made any noise, hide under the nearest bed or in the wardrobe!

As secondary as it seems to Hello Neighbor and other indoor stealth horrors (are there that many?), Granny is quite a game in its own right. It’s full of puzzles for you to solve in the stealth mode. Any item may have another meaning, so you can use it either to distract the Granny or to make your way to the next room. And no, it won’t be easy. Granny had enough time to build a large labyrinth.

You only have five nights to escape – that is, five lives. If the Granny meets you on your way, she’ll smash you with a bat. You can start again later, though.

Replay Value 8/10

If you are the type to learn from your mistakes if you like to try new ways and still get yours if you will regardless – it’s your game. Granny won’t let you get away with a single wrong move. Also, she learns from her mistakes too. So five nights won’t probably be enough to explore the house. It may take you months to go through and find the way out.

Controls 10/10

First-person games like this provide quite an established set of controls. The virtual joystick to move with is under the player’s left thumb. The right part of the screen is the camera move area: drag a finger upon it to change the direction of your look. Interactive elements (like doors you can open) are highlighted, and there aren’t so many options that you can get confused.
It’s more about your memory and ability to hear sounds than about response or combos. Control simplicity doesn’t make the game easier.

Conclusion

If you are fond of horrors, stealth, survival, puzzles, and psychological nightmares, don’t miss Granny. Chances are, though, you already play Granny, as it’s been installed from Google Play for over 100M times. It must have touched some nerve that makes millions of players love it.
