Why Call of Duty’s Composer Says AI Can’t Replace Human Creativity

Nothing will ever supplant the emotional richness and inventive spark that people bring as artists and creators, says the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 composer, who argues that AI should not take over creative roles in games and that technology ought to serve as a tool for making artists’ work smoother and faster.

In a conversation about the challenges of making a complete score for a Modern Warfare multiplayer mode for the first time, composer Jason Graves also discussed the increasing adoption of AI in music creation, especially across entertainment and video games. He made clear that he sees human imagination as central to the process, not something that can be fully reproduced by software.

He explained that music is far more than arranged notes and that it comes from lived moments, instinct shaped by feeling, and the many small choices that give a work its own identity. For him, those qualities are what make human-made art resonate in a way machines cannot fully copy.

Although he does not support AI as a replacement for artists, Graves said he welcomes tools that help creators work more efficiently. He emphasized that there is a major difference between aiding creativity and fully substituting it with automated systems and code.

He also discussed how he approached the multiplayer music, saying it called for a different mindset than the campaign score. Along the way, he pointed to the game itself as a strong source of ideas and credited the audio team as a major influence on the finished work.
